Question 1
A recipe for 8 biscuits uses 120 g of butter. How much butter is needed for 20 biscuits?
Answer: 300 g. 120 ÷ 8 = 15 g per biscuit. 15 × 20 = 300 g.
Question 2
Which of these is a prime number: 69, 70, 71 or 72?
Answer: 71. 71 has no factors other than 1 and itself. The others are all divisible by smaller numbers.
Question 3
A rectangle is 29 cm long and 13 cm wide. What is its area in cm²?
Answer: 377. Area = length × width = 29 × 13 = 377 cm².
Question 4
Boys, girls and teachers at a sports day are in the ratio 8 : 9 : 1. There are 270 people in total. How many teachers are there?
Answer: 15. Total parts = 8 + 9 + 1 = 18. Each part = 270 ÷ 18 = 15. Teachers = 1 part = 15.
Question 5
A bus travels 75 km at 50 km/h. How long does it take?
Answer: 1.5 hours. Time = distance ÷ speed = 75 ÷ 50 = 1.5 hours.
Question 6
A car travels at 60 mph for 2 hours 15 minutes. How far does it travel?
Answer: 135 miles. 2 hours 15 min = 2.25 hours. 60 × 2.25 = 135 miles.
Question 7
A student recorded these temperatures: 20, 8, 14, 2, 11 °C. What is the median?
Answer: 11. Sort the values: 2, 8, 11, 14, 20. The middle value is 11.
Question 8
A car costs £10,000 and depreciates by 10% each year. What is it worth after 1 year?
Answer: £9,000. 10% of £10,000 = £1,000. £10,000 − £1,000 = £9,000.
Question 9
A card is drawn at random from cards numbered 1 to 10. What is the probability of drawing a number less than 4?
Answer: 3/10. Numbers less than 4 are 1, 2 and 3 - that is 3 cards out of 10, so P = 3/10.
Question 10
A student scores 72, 85, 68 and 90 in four tests. What score is needed in the fifth test for a mean of 80?
Answer: 85. For a mean of 80 over 5 tests you need 5 × 80 = 400. Current total = 315. Fifth score = 400 − 315 = 85.
Question 11
A bus leaves at 09:45 and arrives at 13:20. How long is the journey?
Answer: 3 hours 35 minutes. 09:45 to 12:45 is 3 hours, then 12:45 to 13:20 is 35 minutes. Total = 3 hours 35 minutes.
