The Selective Eligibility Test (SET) is the Stage 1 test for five Sutton grammar schools - Wilson’s, Sutton Grammar, Nonsuch, Wallington High for Girls and Wallington County. Here is the 2026 format, then free practice questions.
Sutton SET 11+ format (2026)
Stage 1 SET is two multiple-choice papers, maths and English, each around 45 minutes.
The English paper has four sections: one on KS2 spelling and three on reading comprehension.
The maths paper covers the KS2 topics - place value, the four operations, fractions, decimals, percentages, measurement, geometry and statistics.
There is no verbal or non-verbal reasoning in the SET.
For 2027 entry the SET is on 15 September 2026; shortlisted children sit each school’s Stage 2 in late September or early October.
Dates and pass marks change each year - always confirm with the school or local authority before you rely on them.

A recipe for 8 biscuits uses 120 g of butter. How much butter is needed for 20 biscuits?
Answer: 300 g. 120 ÷ 8 = 15 g per biscuit. 15 × 20 = 300 g.
Question 2 · Maths
Boys, girls and teachers at a sports day are in the ratio 8 : 9 : 1. There are 270 people in total. How many teachers are there?
Answer: 15. Total parts = 8 + 9 + 1 = 18. Each part = 270 ÷ 18 = 15. Teachers = 1 part = 15.
Question 3 · Maths
A rectangle is 29 cm long and 13 cm wide. What is its area in cm²?
A student scores 72, 85, 68 and 90 in four tests. What score is needed in the fifth test for a mean of 80?
Answer: 85. For a mean of 80 over 5 tests you need 5 × 80 = 400. Current total = 315. Fifth score = 400 − 315 = 85.

Which literary device is used in 'The moon smiled down at me'?
Answer: personification. Giving a human action (smiling) to something non-human (the moon) is personification.
Question 6 · English
Which word is closest in meaning to "impeccable"?
Answer: perfect. "Impeccable" means faultless or perfect.
Question 7 · English
Which sentence has correct pronoun usage?
Answer: She and I went to the shop. Use the subject pronouns 'she' and 'I' when they are the subject of the sentence.
Question 8 · English
Which of the following is spelled correctly?
Answer: achieve. 'i before e except after c': achieve is correct. Receive and conceive follow the 'after c' rule.
